I was a bit late lining up our accommodations in the Lake Chapala area and by the time I got around to it many of the American and Canadian snowbirds who flock here had already snapped up the best places at the best prices, usually for a period of several months. A good many of them come every winter and always stay at the same place, so the inventory this time of year is limited.
The building we ended up staying at is owned by an American couple who live on the top floor while they rent out the lower floor and also a separate casita on their property. When I inquired they told me their two rental units were already spoken for but, since they were going to be taking a trip back to the states during the time we asked about, there was the possibility of renting their own top floor space. After providing references and proving to their satisfaction that we weren't deadbeats likely to leave their living space a filthy shambles, we agreed on the rental. It was more money than their regular rental units but the space is bigger, has more comfortable furniture, wi-fi, a washer-dryer and a nice big television with English language channels. It's a very comfortable space and our “neighbors” in the rental units are all quite nice.
