Chapala - Gringoland

We've moved northwest of Oaxaca but are still in the highlands, having relocated to the shores of Lake Chapala, the largest freshwater lake in Mexico. According to our local friend Gordon, it is as large as San Francisco Bay. A string of villages along its northern shore – and in particular the town of Ajijic – are said to be home to the largest population of North American expats in the world. I've heard numbers from 10,000 to 40,000 Americans and Canadians but who knows what the real number is, and how many are full time or part time residents. They are drawn here by the great year round climate, beautiful scenery and proximity to Guadalajara with all its cultural offerings and its international airport, less than an hour north of here. We are drawn here for the same reason and so can now add ourselves to the great gringo horde for the next month.

The lake is surrounded by mountains, making for an idylic setting.

A double rainbow greeted us on our first day here.
